Gamification has recently come to mean “the processing of adding games or game-like elements to something to encourage participation”. This can be used to turn something tedious or difficult into fun and engaging by tapping into people’s desire for competition.
This project is an exploration into the use of gamification in language learning, with the aim to understand what game elements users prefer (if any at all), and how this affects the learning and engagement of these users.
The developed application is a social site where users can complete language learning courses, while competing with their friends by challenging them. The challenges consist on vocabulary and terms from the language learning courses, which further helps learning.
Part of the challenge in this project was not only to create a complete web application, but also to develop a Spanish course worth taking, and to recruit participants in enough numbers as to gather significant data.
